CSCS Concussion Assessment Protocol for Athletics
The Certified Athletic Trainer and each Coach is required to complete a concussion recognition and care training course. If the Athletic Trainer or Coach suspects that a student has even one symptom of a concussion they are to remove the athlete from any athletic activity and immediately contact the student’s parent or guardian. State law requires that once a concussion is suspected, the student must be evaluated by a qualified physician (D.O., M.D., P.A., N.P.). If it is confirmed that the student has a concussion they will be held from all physical activity in school and sport until they are symptom free and cleared by a qualified physician. The Athletic Trainer communicates with our school Nurse and Principal to place the student on an academic concussion protocol in their classes for the duration of their recovery. Whenever possible, students are encouraged to use community health services that are available to help them establish baseline testing scores, assessment and treatment through their recovery. Once a student has been cleared of all symptoms, they will work with the Athletic Trainer and Coach to help them gradually return to practice through a 5 step process.
